Why do squirrels pick something up, eat half of it, throw it away, and pick up another one to eat?

The squirrels take the nuts and pieces of fruit and other things that I leave out for them, they eat half of it or take a few bites, then they throw it away, pick up another item of the same type, eat half of that and throw it away, and this repeats. Why do they waste food? Why do squirrels pick something up, eat half of it, throw it away, and pick up another one to eat?
Maybe they have an instinct that they need to leave something to decompose (a natural compost pile).

Or maybe the other item looks better than the current one. You know how it is, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Why do squirrels pick something up, eat half of it, throw it away, and pick up another one to eat?
Because squirrels are a stupid kind of animal.
Something else will pick up the remainder. Squirrely logic.
Maybe they keep hoping that the fruit is healthy organic stuff, so they keep trying! Animals are pretty smart when it comes to food. The squirrels ate all the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds!!
They are wasteful and squirrely beasts!! Most of all, they just don't give a damn what anybody thinks!
Short attention span.
They waste because it's heavily abundant.
They didn't like the taste. DUH!
They try to eat as much as possible, and as quick as possible when the are spoilt for choice.
why do kids do the same???
Obviously the squirrels you are watching are male. It's a well known fact that males never finish ANYTHING.
